As another Fall hastily approaches, Broad Spartans from across the globe are preparing to arrive back to East Lansing. Specifically, Broad students from all grade levels are excited to continue and accomplish their educational goals during the 2017-2018 academic year. Throughout the Summer, many Broad students have gained professional experience through internships, furthered their academic education by enrolling in classes, and even established and started up their own businesses. It is the driven attitude that all Broad students have that makes returning back on campus a special time of year.
This upcoming academic year, the Broad College of Business partnered with Broad Student Senate to implement additional changes geared towards allowing students to have a successful year both in and out of the classroom.
This past Spring the Broad Student Senate elected its new Executive Board for this upcoming year. Pairing their leadership with the creativity and insight of the other remaining Senators, the Broad Student Senate is prepared to serve as a liaison between Broad students and faculty.
According to President Yoodong Hwang, Broad Student Senate is “a unique student group that not only focuses on its members, but ensures that the business college community is well connected.” Through this idea, the newly elected President has an ambitious agenda to achieve this year. President Hwang stated, “One of our goals is to give back to the Eli Broad College of Business community as well as provide growth and development opportunities for students to get involved on campus”.
It is through this enthusiastic agenda that President Yoodong Hwang hopes to see an increase in college-wide participation. Participation events include charitable events such as the Road To Broad 5k, as well as professional development events tailored towards helping students find their passion in life. Vice President Kara McGlashan states that the purpose for events throughout the year is to, “benefit, develop, or give back, to the students of Broad”.
Outside of creating and hosting events for Broad students, the Broad Student Senate is a key contributor towards marketing the Broad College of Business to high-school students interested in attending Michigan State University. With this in mind, the organization has been heavily involved in establishing a video broadcasting campaign. According to President Hwang, “over the summer we have focused on the creation, development, and incorporation of a video broadcasting campaign focusing on an effective delivery of news to students inside the college”. News will consist of corporate visits, motivational speakers, and college-held events, all specifically designed for students to get involved outside of the classroom.
With the agenda created by the Executive Board, there are many anticipated challenges that can be expected in the future. Secretary Amelia Cottrell recently stated, “we have so many ambitious goals but we have several roadblocks to overcome in order to execute them to the best of our ability”. One of the roadblocks Secretary Cottrell is referring to is the construction for the new Broad Pavilion taking place in between the Business College and Shaw Hall.
Although the Broad Pavilion will allow future students to collaborate and effectively learn, many additional alumni will be drawn back to campus. Although for the time being this may cause minor disruptions, Amelia Cottrell reassures that, “the Broad Student Senate will work with the Deans and faculty to keep students up to date with the progress of the Broad Pavilion”, in addition to providing any resources needed so the construction does not prohibit any learning taking place.
When arriving back on campus, be aware that the Broad Student Senate is willing to assist any business student in need. Treasurer James Doman mentioned that, “Senators within this student-government organization are excited for this upcoming year”. In addition, Treasurer Doman stated that students are able to apply to join the organization, “We are an exciting group to keep an eye on and look for an application at Fall Welcome. We are looking for confident and curious individuals who want to pursue new ideas”. For any additional information regarding the organization, please visit the Fall Welcome on August 28th, as well as submit an application if you would like to obtain a position within the governing body.
